On Europe's doorstep, a battle against animal disease
Sometime in late 2005 a stealthy invader slipped across one of Turkey's eastern borders and started to move westward toward Europe: a new strain of the virus that causes foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), a devastating sickness affecting cows, pigs, sheep and goats.

A nine-person team from the joint FAO/OIE Crisis Management Centre (CMC) is in the Republic of (South) Korea on a 10-day mission collecting epidemiological data from rural areas south of the capital, Seoul, where three recent outbreaks of avian influenza in domestic poultry occurred.

H5N1 bird flu virus is changing
According to a report in last week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on the identification of a new H5N1 virus sublineage in poultry, this new virus sublineage, called Fujian virus, appears to have become the dominant strain of the H5N1 avian influenza circulating in parts of Asia.

International agencies advise OIE animal health and welfare fund
Five international organizations met for the first time in Paris on 20 October 2006 to advise the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) on funding to help developing countries meet international standards for dealing with disease outbreaks and related issues.

FAO’s first decentralized ECTAD unit established in RAP
The Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) has recently been established in the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP). This unit, having Dr. Laurence Gleeson as its Chief (effective 22 February 2006).
