International Workshop on Geographical Information System Ap plications in Animal Prodcution and Health 3-7 March 2008 Philippines

The FAO-APHCA together with the Philippine Bureau of Animal Industries with support of the Italian Funded Environmental Animal Health Management Initiative (project GCP/PHI/050/ITA) conducted the International Workshop on Geographical Information System Applications in Animal Prodcution and Health last 3-7 March 2008 in the Philippines. Repesentatives from 14 APHCA member states participated in the workshop: Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Sr Lanka and Thailand.

All participants were sensitised on the importance of information communication technology and geomatics in the twenty first century. They were unanimous that further institutional strengthening, capacity building and collaborative networking were required to demonstrate and promote GIS use in animal production and health throughout the APHCA region.

Participants were encouraged to seek to establish collaborative links between their own departments/agencies such as agriculture, forestry, water resources, land use management and environment to share existing data that would aid in the analysis and interpretation of animal production and health issues.
